They are the best of photo journalism.

Every year, following the annual World Press Photo Contest, the winning images go on a world tour. After the prize-giving ceremony and the opening in Amsterdam, the World Press Photo Exhibition travels to 80 cities. Shown now at the Oude Kerk, the Old Church, in Amsterdam, and twelve other cities, these photos are too honest to ignore. Such as Tim Hetherington's World Press Photo of the year of an exhausted American soldier resting in a Korengal Valley's bunker, in Afghanistan, last September.

Hotels by the water

My hotels by the water always look at the city. No need for a car. They all are reachable by water transportation. They all are a short distance from the city. They all allow us to live our own Venice.

AMSTERDAM
NH Doelen Hotel. XVII century- style building, on the Amstel River near the historical center ≈ From the central station, water taxi to the hotel dock.

BOSTON
Hyatt Harborside. Contemporary, on BOS's west bank facing the city ≈ A 10 minute ride in a water taxi to the city's 20 publics landing docks.

ISTANBUL
Sumahan On the Water. On the Bosphorus's Asian side. In the Çengelköy's neighbourhood, with its wooden houses and good seafood restaurants ≈ Hotel motor launch or ferry to the town center (Kabatas).

NEW YORK
Hyatt Regency Jersey City. On the Hudson River with a panoramic view of Manhattan and the statue of Liberty ≈ A few minutes from Wall Street by water shuttle.

ROTTERDAM
Hotel New York. On the New Meuse River. Former HQs of the Holland-Amerika Lijn. The port's in district ≈ From the central station, streetcar #5 to Willemspein, exit at Westplein and watertaxi to hotel.

SAN DIEGO
Coronado Island Marriott Resort. On Coronado island, a few minutes by boat from downtown, faster than driving ≈ Water taxi from the hotel or regular boat service, 400 meters away, to downtown (San Diego Broadway Pier).

SAN FRANCISCO
The Inn Above Tide. In Sausalito, on the bay. Tourist destination. Sea food restaurants (Scoma's, Fish) and cafés (Trieste) ≈ BART from SFO and OAK to San Francisco, Embarcadero station, and ferry (30 minutes) from the Ferry Building.

Waters Edge. On the bay, in Tiburon, village and marina. Do brunch at Sam's or the Sweden House Bakery ≈ BART from SFO and OAK to San Francisco, Embarcadero station, and ferry (20 minutes) from the Ferry Building.
